One Week Down, Five More To Go...
The first week of day camp for Jack and Liv was an absolute success! Liv had a very hard time adjusting at first, but now she's fine with it. Jack was a trooper all week long, on his best behavior. His aide lucked out, getting the best kid in the whole group, really. He probably doesn't even need an aide, but it's a safety net just in case he gets overwhelmed or overstimulated. So far, he's been absolutely fine and everyone is impressed with him. A lot of the credit goes to Jack for managing himself and self-regulating so well throughout the day; a lot of credit also goes to his teacher last school year for helping him gain those skills to self-regulate all day long. Of all my children, he is the one I worry about the least and you wouldn't think that would be for the simple fact that he is on the autism spectrum. Honestly, you can take Jack anywhere because he loves new challenges, places, and experiences, unlike many kids on the spectrum. He surprises us all the time.
Both kids love the swimming time, the arts & crafts, the sports, and the games. They come home exhausted and with a lot to talk about. They both have made friends and all is well. Six hours a day of fun away from home...it doesn't get much better than that. Their field trip to a carnival was cancelled yesterday due to the heat, but next Friday they'll go to the zoo and the beach. They're going to have a blast!
And...wait for it...the surprise we've all been waiting for...(drum roll)...
He's actually eating the lunch he gets through the day camp. AND drinking milk! WTF?! Who IS this kid? Jack hasn't had dairy since he was two years old; I figured he was lactose sensitive because I believe his body tells him what it needs. Now, all of a sudden, he's eating corned beef on rye sandwiches and drinking milk. And sub sandwiches with salami, pastrami, ham, bologna, etc. and chicken salad with cranberries. I think someone's going through a growth spurt and realizes that his body actually needs food. But milk?! He NEVER drinks milk, so I don't even know what to think.
This week went swimmingly well. We're looking forward to five more weeks of the same.
